Using Electric Quilt with XP

Editors Note: Electric Quilt 6 was designed to be used with Windows XP and Vista.  These questions refer to earlier versions.

I just purchased a computer with an XP operating system. In what order do I install EQ and all the compatible programs for it?

Sometimes EQ5 crashes when I am coloring a block in Easy Draw using XP. How can I avoid this?

Service Pack 1 available from Microsoft corrects this problem. To find it, click on the Windows Update button on your Start menu. Be aware that if you upgrade using this service pak, you will not be able to use the notecard.

If you would prefer not to update XP at this time, or if you have already upgraded and want to use the notecard, try this fix:

On the Windows Desktop, right-click on the EQ5 icon. Click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Click to check the "Run this program..." box. Click the down arrow beside it to drop down choices and choose Win 98/ME. Click Apply. Click OK.

For more help, see http://www.electricquilt.com/Support/FAQ/eq5faq/eq5faq.htm

I am running EQ in Win 98/ME compatibility mode and can't copy and paste a Snapshot into Word.

If you want to cut and paste a snapshot, you'll need to uncheck the "run this program in Win98/ME mode" box. (Directions above.)

To avoid this, you could just save the snapshot to file (or as a .bmp) and import it into the program you are using.

After installing Windows XP on my computer, when I pull up Search by Name in Blockbase, the lettering is so small it is unreadable.

This answer is from Penny McMorris:

With the new development of XP and 2000, the way the display in the Search by Name dialog box works does not work in the same way. It is an incompatibility problem caused by XP and 2000. BlockBase was programmed before Windows 2000 and XP came out, using the latest Windows programming tools. Since then, Windows has changed how the operating systems in 2000 and XP affects the display made with their tools. There are two ways to deal with this:

  1. You can ignore it, and use Wildcard Search to search by name. This is actually the search I use all of the time, preferring it to the Search by Name. I prefer it because the Wildcard Search lets me type a whole name and finds the block just as Search by Name does. But it also lets me type just part of a name, and will find all blocks with that word in it. (Often I may have a name slightly wrong, and therefore not find the block using Search by Name.)
  2. You can get a new BlockBase disc which will solve the incompatibility, for the price of the disc, shipping, handling -- $5. Contact techsupport@electricquilt.com

Can I use the free BlockBase screen saver in XP?

The Blockbase screen saver runs under XP, however, you have to be very quick...The blocks spin in and disappear at a much faster rate than on Win98 or 95. There is no way of slowing down the speed of the blocks.

I am working through the book EQ4 Magic and am having problems with the "Making a Professional Handout" chapter. When I get to paste the metafile to Word, I can't do anything else. I am using Word 2002 (Word XP).

This answer is from Patti R. Anderson, author of the EQ5 Drawing book.

Editing pictures is just slightly different in Word XP. They've added the Drawing Canvas. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. The nice thing is it doesn't do that screen jump/zoom thing anymore, you work on the inserted picture in actual size. Try this:

  1. Save your Snapshot from EQ5 (on Windows Clipboard or as am .emf file, it doesn't really make a difference)
  2. Insert the picture into your word document. Use CTRL+V if you copied it to the Clipboard. I fyou saved the file, use Insert Picture (Insert menu/Picture/From file) menu.
  3. Once it's on the page, you need to convert it to a MS Word Drawing Object. Double-clicking does NOT work in Word XP, you need to select the image, RIGHT-click and choose Edit Picture. It will ask you if you want to convert the image to a Word Drawing Object. Say Yes.

Once you do this your metafile will now be surrounded by a frame/box, similar to a Text box, whose main goal is to keep multiple part images together to make word wrapping easier. You can expand the box by grabbing the corners or use the Drawing Canvas toolbar (it should pop up whenever your metafile is selected) to expand it. When you're done, on the Drawing Canvas toolbar again, click on Fit to make the canvas fit around your image better. You _can_ move parts/patches of your block outside the Drawing Canvas...or all of it. You may want to do this if you need copies of just patches for cutting directions or for piecing units.

BTW...I have a whole section on Metafiles in Word in my EQ5 Drawing book.

Patti Anderson reveals all her drawing secrets, teaching you the tricks the experts, whose EQ5 designs get published in books and magazines, know. You'll master EQ5's powerful drawing tools, creating blocks you've admired in magazines and quilt shows but never dreamed you'd be able to draw.

Starting with the basics, Patti explains do's and don'ts, and presents dozens of time-saving tips. You'll not only learn to look at a favorite block design and redraw it in EQ5. Patti's easy-to-do lessons will actually free you to create your own original designs.  This is the perfect book for beginners who don’t know what or how to draw, as well as designers and teachers wanting to publish or be published.

See for yourself! Print out and work through a sample lesson on how to draw a Tilted Maple Leaf block from the EQ5 Drawing book, courtesy of Electric Quilt. This lesson is a PDF file (Portable Document Format), so you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view it.  Order from the Electric Quilt Company.
